In
1990, 28-year-old Lee Ewing, who had moved to North Carolina from California,
was working as an assistant chef at the Pine Crest Inn in Tryon. He noticed
the Inn had great difficulty obtaining fresh, good quality sprouts. Lee
had been the manager of a sprout farm in California and immediately saw
a niche for a new sprout farm in the Carolinas. He began growing Alfalfa
Sprouts and Mung Beans and started distributing them to the local stores
and restaurants. By 1995 then, Green Creek Sprouts had grown into a major
supplier for not only local stores, but also some larger grocery chains.
Talks between Lee and Ed Mills, owner of Sunshine Maker’s Sprout Farm in
Fairview, North Carolina later formed a merger between the two companies.
Thus, Sunny Creek Farm, Inc. was born.
Today, Sunny Creek Farm is the largest
supplier of fresh sprouts in the southeast. The facility has grown into
a modern, state of the art plant with a well-trained staff and comprehensive
food safety program.
